The Old Old Yankee Stadium 1973
I am a ballpark afficionado. I love old ballparks. Unfortunately, the past 15-20 years has seen the destruction of some of the great old parks...Tiger Stadium, Comiskey Park and more recently Yankee Stadium. The old Yankee Stadium was stripped of much of her charm in a 1970's "modernization". Little good came out of the 1970's in architecture or fashion (the music was great, though), and this YS redo was no exception. Whoever made the decision to remove the frieze should have been forced to sit in a room and listen to non-stop Dickie Goodman novelty songs. Like this one...........
OK, so not all the music from the '70's was timeless. Although whoever had the idea to remove the frieze probably liked those corny Goodman songs.
The 1976-2008 Yankee Stadium incarnation, while not the same, did still have the feel of an old ballpark. Just walking through the old concourse, you could sense the history...........
Unlike the shiny, new $1.5 billion place across the street........
Don't get me wrong, the new place is nice. But for me, the thrill of walking into the Yankee's home is gone. The Bronx grit has been replaced by a Bronx mall.
